The title on your business cards may say a lot of what kind of person you are, how big your company is and also in some cases what you actually do for a living . Most people owning a small company or working for themselves print business cards with Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) as their title because they think it sounds cool and may impress the people they give their business cards to. If you're company is a big one with a famous name like Coca-Cola, Verisign or Name Intelligence then it works, people will get impressed by the CEO title on your business cards, but what if your company is a smaller company or if you're self-employed?

If you're self-employed or working for your own small company with just a few employees, then any other creative title may be more impressive then CEO because the user may actually think you're a piece in a much bigger puzzle . I for example got Business Development Director on my business cards because that's more correct if you look at the kind of work I do here at Xavier Media. I develop the company and it's services . I also got that title because the CEO of Xavier Media gave me that job

So instead of choosing CEO or Managing Director, go for a title that describe the work you do. That's much cooler and may be even more impressive then just something that everyone got printed on the business cards.

With or without www?

With or without www is simply one of the biggest questions you need to ask yourself when starting a new site, but unfortunately most people simply forget to decide.

First of all we need to talk about why it's important to decide on with or without. One of the reasons is the search engines. Links to sampleaddress.com and www.sampleaddress.com are counted as links to two different sites by search engines which will impact negatively on your SERP. Instead of finding 20 links to www.sampleaddress.com search engiens may find 10 links to www.sampleaddress.com and 10 links to sampleaddress.com.

One other reason is branding. How would you like your visitors to remember your site? At XavierMedia.com we're using www, but at our new site adv.erti.se we're not (you can still type www.adv.erti.se and it will work).

If you're using www you should remember that sometimes visitors type a few w too much or too little. So if you're using you should make sure that w.sampleaddress.com, ww.sampleaddress.com and wwww.sampleaddress.com will work too as a service to your visitors.

If you have a really popular site you may even consider to register wwwsampleaddress.com just to be on the safe side (www.sampleaddress.com without the dot).

The Serbian top level domain (TLD) will launch on the 10 of January 2008. The cool thing with this domain is that it's so easy to create domain hacks.

Why blog?

Why should you blog? If you got something you're selling or something you want to promote (like affiliate programs) then you should definitely blog about it. I for example are blogging about domain names, hosting and other webmaster related stuff at the Xavier Media blog where I'm publishing most of my posts is packed with ads for my companies products. By blogging you also show your new and existing customers that you know at least something about your area of expertise (you're blogging so you must know at least something about what you're writing ).

Posting quality articles in your blog is also a fantastic SEO technique since the search engines will find your blog posts. When I'm posting something new in one of my blogs I usually get an email from Google Alerts that Google has crawled my new post in less then 15 minutes from the time of posting. That's really impressive and also something really good for your company (the more quality pages the search engines got about you and your company, the bigger chance new customers will end up on your site ).

So how do I start blogging? Well, it's easy. There are several free services out there on the Internet like Blogger and Wordpress, but I prefer to use my own domain name for my blogs instead of subdomains to domain names owned by someone else. That's because then I can move my blog anywhere I like and I can also do whatever I like with the blog. It's also better to use your own domain name when you're building your own brand or trademark and it looks much more professional.

Oh, my God. There are wikis everywhere on the Internet today and they seems to get even more by the minute (or sometimes even by the second ). You got Million Dollar Wiki, Million Euro Wiki, Five Dollar Wiki, One Buck Wiki, Quarter Wiki and of course the original wiki and mother of all: WikiPedia.org.

The trend of new wikis all the time is reminding me of the trend with Million Dollar Homepage. Do you remember that site? I'm not surprised if you have forgotten about it because most people have. Million Dollar Homepage was a page where you could buy pixles (small pictures of 10 x 10 pixles) linked to any site you wanted. When all the pixles had been sold the owner would have earned a million dollar (less a few percent in payment processing fees).

When the Million Dollar Homepage got attention in the news all around the world the Internet got all filled with all types of pixels selling web sites where you could buy pixels of all kind at all kinds of prices. It didn't take long before all the pixels selling sites started dying and soon everyone had forgotten about them :(

I think we will see the same trend soon with all the Wikis because I saw that one of the bigger wikis is up for sale at SitePoint. I think that indicates that the owner wants to cash in on his work before everyone forgets about his site. What do you think?

"The .se drop"

On the 25th of March 2006 I published a list of popular top level domain names (TLD) and the number of pages hosted on each TLD. When Xavier Media some time later started counting the number of pages on a regular basis for Xavier Media Whois Database (can be found at whois.xaviermedia.com) we noticed a slow drop in rank for the Swedish top level domain (.se).

On the 25th of March 2006 the .se TLD was found on the 14th place on the list, but on the toplist from today (11th of December 2007) the .se TLD is only on 21st place! Is the .se domain loosing ground to other top level domains? I would say yes. The .com TLD is really popular in many countries and also in Sweden. The .nu domain is not as popular as it used to be (years ago), but it's still being used for web sites (nu is the Swedish word for now).

It's going to be interesting to see if this development continues....

Will a .us domain get poor ranking in search engines?

I saw a post about that some time ago in a webmaster forum. Since I myself own a couple of .us domains and I also got a lot of other country code domain names I started doing some research on this subject.

Field study 1: I started my research by visiting one of the biggest .us sites, del.icio.us, and selected the first two keywords I could find on their site: social bookmarking. I then pointed by browser to Google and entered "social bookmarking" (without the "") in the search field. As number two in the search result I found del.icio.us, so I guess that's acceptable.

Field study 2: I visited another big .us web site, mon.itor.us, and did the same thing as with del.icio.us but using the keywords "free websites performance". The results where almost as good as in the case of del.icio.us because I found mon.itor.us as number three in the search results. I did another search, but this time for just "websites performance" and mon.itor.us was found as number four in the results.

These two field studies show us that it's possible to build a successful and high ranking website using a .us domain name . It shouldn't be any different if you use a .uk, .se, .dk, .eu or whatever top level domain for your site.

More and more pages are hosted on .MOBI and .NAME

The latest statistics from Xavier Media Whois shows that more and more pages are actually hosted on the "new" top level domain names (TLDs) .MOBI and .NAME. Since mid September .MOBI have had about a 50% increase in the hosted number of pages while .NAME have had about 30% increase! I don't think you can find any other TLDs active today with such an increase.

Also the country code top level domain .TV (ccTLD) have had a fantastic development lately. It's only about 10% increase in the number of hosted pages, but that's impressive too since the prise for a .TV domain is slightly higher then for .NAME and .MOBI domains.

Tomorrow is the day I wrote about earlier: The day when domain name prices will increase :( (see my post here) Verisign and some other registries will be able to increase domain name prices for all registrars (i.e. the companies where people like you and me register domain names).

Today registrars pay $6.00 per .com or .net domain name to Verisign, but after the price increase Verisign will get $6.42, but that's not all!!! Verisign can do more price increases if they want to and of course they will because Verisign is a profit hungry company :(

If Verisign do all the price increases they are allowed to do you will see an increase in domain pricing like this:
Year 2: $6.87
Year 3: $7.35
Year 4: $7.86
Year 5: $8.42
Year 6: $9.00

So hurry and renew all your domain names before it's too late!!!

Why is .SU still active?

The .SU top level domain (TLD) was used by the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. Since all two characters top level domain names must be mentioned in the ISO 3166-1 standard as a country code, why is .SU still active?

I don't think anyone got a really good answer to that question, but it looks like ICANN wants to retire the .SU TLD because they have been in contact with the .SU operators.

The ICANN Blog wrote:

To retain .SU, under current policy they would need to successfully apply for the code to be re-instated into the ISO 3166-1 standard, either as a regular two-letter country code, or as an "exceptionally reserved" code like UK and EU. (ICANN permits uses of codes that have been exceptionally reserved by ISO in certain circumstances.)

I can understand if a TLD lives longer then a country since it got registered domain names, but I can't understand why a TLD like .SU still accepts new applications.

Lets just hope that all the .SU domain owners can find a new TLD like .RU (Russia) or .UA (Ukraine) if .SU is really retired.

How to get published

Almost everyone got their own blog these days or at least a web site with some information or articles, but not everyone have published their own book. I can agree with those of you who claim that not everyone got ideas that are worth printing, but I've seen a lot of nice ideas that should be printed.

It's not that hard to get published: simply do it yourself. I got my own book printed and published with a budget of about $170.

How to do it

1. Write your book. This is actually the hard part since you need to have a good idea and you have to do some research before you start writing. Once this has been done and you have written the text you want to publish it's really simple :D

2. Apply for a ISBN. All books need an ISBN so the book can be identified at libraries and bookstores. Over at isbn-international.org you'll find a complete list of national ISBN agencies where you can apply for your own ISBN. Since I'm located in Sweden I applied at www.kb.se and if you live in US you can apply at www.isbn.org.

3. When you got your ISBN you need to make sure it's mentioned on the first page of your book and on your cover (usually you'll find some instructions at the website for your national ISBN agency). You also need to create a bar code for your cover (so that libraries and bookstores can scan your book). At Bookland you can create a free bar code from your ISBN: http://www.tux.org/~milgram/bookland/

4. I printed my book at CafePress.com so I simply uploaded the book (in PDF format), the cover (both front and back) and some information about the book at their website. If you don't have any software for creating PDF files you can get one at CutePDF.com.

5. After the upload at CafePress.com they sent me a PDF preview with the first 5 pages, 5 pages from the middle and the last 5 pages so I could make sure that the book looked OK. When I had verified that everything looked OK, I simply ordered 10 books with my credit card and after about 1 week I got the books delivered to my address.

6. Some ISBN agencies (like the Swedish ISBN Agency) require you to send legal deposits to them. If you're required to do so you got information about that when you applied for your ISBN along with instructions on how to send your legal deposits to them.

7. If you want your book in bookstores like Amazon.com or BN.com you should have a look at these quick start guides:

It could be a good idea to have a look at these guides before you design your cover to make sure that your book meet all requirements.

8. Now you just have to wait for your first order (you can of course also advertise your book to speed up the order intake :D ).

How to get an .edu link to your site?

I have seen this question asked in a lot of forums on the Internet lately and I will soon tell you where to get .edu links, but first I need to answer another question I have seen lately.

Are .edu links any different from links from .com pages?
According to Matt Cutts blog a link from a .com page is no different from a link from a .edu page. Matt says "Google doesn't treat .edu and .gov links differently, those pages just usually have a lot of PageRank." (see the video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid756437348670651505). So by just having a link to your site from a .edu domain will not by itself give you a lot of PageRank, you need to get links from pages with high PageRank to get higher PageRank for your site.

Since Google doesn't threat .edu domain any different then other domains why should other search engines like Yahoo, MSN and Live.com do that?

Still want links from .edu domains?
Since you will not get any better ranking in search engines after a few .edu links then from a couple of .com links, why do you want .edu links for? My answer is simply: If it's hard to get, then I want it!

Where do I get an .edu link to my site?
There are a few places where you can get .edu links to your site(s). For example at Adison University (www.adison.edu) you can get your own .edu blog for $35/month or if you're active in their forum you can get one link to your site for free. You can also buy expired domain names with links from sites like harvard.edu or you can (this is the hard option) create your own educational institution and register a .edu domain name at www.educause.edu/edudomain/show_faq.asp?codeíUELIGIBILITY. You can of course also become a student at any university with a .edu domain and setup your own student page (most universities offer some free space to their students to setup a personal home page).

You can also get a link from xavier.edu.eu.org if you like (it's not a real .edu domain, but the domain contains .edu :D ).

Stupid domain names, why register?

I've been working on the Xavier Media whois service today and I needed to do some testing with unregistered domain names (I wanted to check the results users get when searching for unregistered domains) so I simply just did a whois look up on asdfasdfasdf.com. I believed that asdfasdfasdf.com was random enough to return a "Domain is available" result, but unfortunately the domain name was registered to ASDFASDFASDF.COM

Alright, one luck guess (or in my case unlucky). So i typed in another "random" domain name: asdfasdfasdfasdf.com. Unfortunately this one was also registered :( .

I simply just have to stop typing asdf to get "random" domain names so I added a couple of d's at the end of the last checked domain and got: asdfasdfasdfasdfddd.com

Believe it or not, but asdfasdfasdfasdfdddd.com is actually also registered. The big question now is why would anyone want to register any of the above mentioned domain names? My guess would simply be typein traffic from stupid programmers, but that can't be enough to pay your hosting fees or what do you think?

At gocomics.com you can find a lot of comic strips (the one I like the most is Calvin & Hobbes).

Each and every day you get a new comic strip of your favourite cartoon and on Sundays some of the comic strips are even in color. The downside is that you need to install some kind of plug-in to view the comics which means that I have problems reading Calvin & Hobbes from my Sony Ericsson phone.
